Chapter Thirteen

Cassidy was warm.

Not in a bad way. Just in an unfamiliar way. She’d gotten used to waking up in the cold of the camp house, but that wasn’t the case as she slowly came to life. She was warm. And comfortable.

And there were warm, strong arms around her.

And then she remembered.

A big inhale coupled with a big smile happened next and when she lifted her head, soft brown eyes were gazing at her.

“Good morning,” Frankie whispered.

“Morning. When did we fall asleep?” She lay back against what she now knew was Frankie’s shoulder, her arm draped across Frankie’s middle.

“We didn’t. You did.”

Cassidy snapped her head back up, suddenly horrified. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” But when she tried to push herself up, Frankie’s arms tightened around her.

“No, no, it’s okay. Lie back down.”

Cassidy held her gaze for a moment before relenting and relaxing. “I’m sorry.”

“Why? Because you fell asleep?” She could feel Frankie’s smile against her forehead. “No reason to be. You fell asleep and then I wasn’t far behind. I only woke up a few minutes before you.”

The words hung there for a beat before Cassidy made the connection. She lifted her head again so she could see Frankie’s eyes. “You slept?”

The smile was slow in coming, but it came. A slight nod. “I did. A good couple of hours.”

She glanced down at their bodies, smooshed together on the couch, her body half on, half off Frankie’s, and she frowned. “With me lying all over you like this?”

“Yes, ma’am.” And then Frankie’s face grew serious. “It was a nice change, to be honest.”

Cassidy blinked at her before settling back down with a “Huh.”

“You will need to charge your phone, however.”

Cassidy looked up at her, and Frankie indicated the floor a few feet away where her phone lay, facedown. She remembered the flashlight, the sliver.

“It went off eventually.”

“How’s your hand?” Cassidy lay back down and grasped Frankie’s hand when she raised it. “We should’ve put a Band-Aid on it.”

“Yeah, well, we were a little busy.”

And it wasn’t that she didn’t remember what had happened merely hours before, but there was something about Frankie’s words that seemed to open floodgates. And flood she did. Her body flushed hotly, her underwear dampened, and she had to swallow down the lump of arousal that appeared in her throat out of nowhere. “We were, weren’t we?” Then she waved a hand dismissively in the direction of the device on the floor. “Who needs a stupid phone anyway?”

She felt Frankie’s laugh under her more than she even heard it. The rumble in her chest. The way she moved just a bit underneath her. She lifted her head so they were face to face, their noses just about touching, and she brought her lips softly to Frankie’s. Tentative. Gentle. She’d absently wondered if kissing Frankie would feel different in the light of day, but it didn’t. It was still wonderful. Hot. Sexy.

The sound of the back door banging open and loud, likely booted footsteps clomping through the house made her jerk in surprise.
